A few years ago my wife, Norene. wanted me to be like Rembrandt and Frida Kahlo who did annual self-portraits. This is my fifth. The first four were close-ups of my face. This time she wanted the painting to show more of my personality. I spend many hours drawing and she thought that’s what the picture should show, so here I am.

This painting is a commission. It is of downtown Indianapolis. There’s a lot of contrast here — dark to light, etc. It has organic and geometric shapes which give interest. Much of the painting is done with atmospheric perspictive — buildings and trees over the top of others to give the impression of depth. The trees give an interesting touch.

This is another painting that was inspired by my recent trip to New England. I absolutely adore Nantucket. There’s a magic there. The houses all have shaker shingles and the roads are brick. This painting shows a scene at the waterfront — shingled buildings and boats. New England is famous for lobsters, and this building is where you can get some. The water reflection is like a mirror except the lines wiggle back and forth because of the wave action.

I love to do harbor scenes. In the past they have always been in England, but I decided to see what they’re like on the New England coast. I drove by all of the towns along the water. There were a lot of very quaint hamlets and I loved them all, but I was especially intrigued by Rockport, Massachusetts. The harbor was beautiful. The sky was clear and the water was deep blue. Somehow the boats seemed more colorful than normal. I loved it. I’ll go back some day.

I love to paddle my canoe. There’s nothing like gliding across a lake, listening to the ripples caused by my boat and watching the water drip from my paddles. This painting is my attempt to portray the atmosphere I feel when I’m out there. Two things that add to the painting — complimentary color: the red canoe versus the green lake. Also atmospheric perspective. The person on the left is painted larger than the one on the right, giving the illusion that she’s closer.

There is a little town called Rockport along the Massachussets coast. It’s really close to New Hampshire. It has a great harbor full of colorful boats. If you look down into the water from the harbor wall, there are rowboats tied to the dock. This painting is that very view. I like their shapes, angles and colors.

I love to paint boats and harbors, especially from England. I wanted to go back there to get more pictures, but my wife told me I should concentrate on the boats in the eastern United States. This painting is from the experience I had sailing on the “Madeline” from Newport, Rhode Island. I tried to portray the sunset light on the person standing near the sail.
