Northville, MI – Awakening…The Artist Inside is pleased to welcome back national award-winning Impressionist artist and highly-regarded art instructor, Tom Slack, to conduct a two-day work shop for local artists.

Artists at all skill levels will find this workshop entertaining and educational. Tom is an instructor extraordinaire who approaches the canvas in a truly unique manner – a technique he teaches in his workshops, “I…teach my method of looking for shapes and values, rather than thinking of the whole object or subject.  …look for shapes of shadows, of colors, of values, and paint them in individually. It comes together like a jigsaw puzzle, and it looks great. It is a much simpler method than is used by most schools of thought….Rather than concentrate on the actual objects; I create a feeling or atmosphere and then work the representation of the items in afterwards.”

The learning process for this workshop will be three-fold: students will hear and see Tom explain and demonstrate his painting process during the opening session on Friday evening (9/19); on Saturday, students will work through the process themselves on their own canvas under Tom’s guidance and instruction.

“In addition to being an excellent artist and master at capturing the magic of a moment on canvas, Tom is an exceptional human being with a great sense of humor and the ability to bring out the best in those around him. He’s especially adept at helping his students uncover their own talents to be able to perform at a level far exceeding their own expectations,” says Awakening…The Artist Inside owner, Sherri R. Mewha, who has had the privilege of taking one of Tom’s workshops in the past.

Works by Tom Slack can be seen at Sherrus Gallery of Fine Art, where he has been a regular exhibiting artist for the past three years. Sherrus Gallery of Fine Art is located in downtown Northville and is under the same ownership as Awakening…The Artist Inside.

Tom Slack’s near death experience on a snowy mountainside in his home state of Utah changed his life forever; he quit his sales job and pursued his dream to be an artist. After earning a fine art degree from the University of Utah, Tom moved to Indianapolis in 1998, where he began his career as a full-time artist. Since then Tom has enjoyed national success with numerous one-man exhibits and as an art lecturer and instructor.

Registration for the workshop is now underway; space is limited – early registration is suggested. The workshop fee of $135 includes light refreshments on Friday evening, coffee and bagels on Saturday morning and lunch. A recommended supply list is available at time of registration.
