Another Still Life Demo.jpg

These are demos from the oil painting class I teach. The first one was from the first day. I just worked on the lay in and the basic color schemes. The next one was on the second day. I look for the colors and values, highlights, and reflected light. Look at the orange. It has a red reflected light from the apple on the right.

Kids on the Beach.jpg

This is one of my oldest oil paintings.  It is of me with three of my children and three of their friends.  We are wading in the ocean at San Diego, California.  I want you to look at the two little girls at the far right and far left.  I have not put much detail in their faces, yet your mind puts it in.  Sometimes if you insist on putting in too much in the painting it will destroy the freshness of your work.  Usually you will never see much more than this in real life.

These are my three kids now and their portrayal in the painting:

Milwaukee Wall.jpg

The Milwaukee River flows right through the middle of downtown Milwaukee.  The Milwaukee Riverwalk goes along both sides of the river.  There are shops and restaurants along the way.  This painting is the view from one of the outdoor restaurants.  The large buildings are actually across the river and appear as a wall to me.

I love cities.  I’m enthralled by big buildings.  I wanted to portray their majesty from a viewer’s sight.  The painting has both geometric  and organic shapes with the windows and walls and the seated woman.  She adds interest to the painting.

monet-garden[1].jpg

The fantastic Claude Monet used to spend weeks and months at a time far away from home doing painting projects.  His wife and family missed him greatly.  He decided he would resolve the problem.  He planted one of the world’s most beautiful gardens and created a charming lilly pond where he painted the rest of his life — right at home in Giverny, France.

I had the chance to visit my favorite painter’s home and gardens.  I was in ecstacy as I walked where he walked.  I saw his beautiful Japanese bridge.  The water lillies were beautiful.  I was able to see what he painted.  The hanging flowers, trees, shrubs, and flowers created a magic I’ll never forget.

Northville.jpg

This is a painting of the very charming town of Northville, Michigan.  It is west of Detroit, closer to Ann Arbor.  I love that place.  There is a magic feeling there.  I especially love it because I found Sherrus Gallery of Fine Art there while I was just browsing the streets.  I walked in and was completely blown away by that fabulous place.  When I met Sherri, the owner, and Sara, the manager, I knew I had to exhibit there.  I didn’t think I had a chance, though, because it was so fantastic and I doubted they would give me a chance.  Luckily, they  did.  I’m so glad.

The painting shows perspective.  Look at the roof line.  It is higher on the right than the left.  That gives the image of depth.  I have included people walking up the sidewalk.  The famous clock is prominent on the left. The painting is bright and colorful, giving it the happy feeling I feel whenever I’m there.

Meandering.jpg

If you drive about five miles east of where I live you are in the  farms.  There are corn fields as far as you can see.  Every so often there will be open areas where cows are grazing, and there are a few hog farms.  I find a lot of peace driving around though that area.  It relieves the everyday stress that wears me down.

I wanted to portray the typical view I see.  This is my impression of it.  A lone cow stands on a small hill between a meandering stream.  In the background you see the yellow cornfields with woods further back.  The nearby hill is graced by dramatic shadows from the trees.  Can you smell the grass?  Can you hear the cow?  Do you feel the breeze?  Are you at peace?
